Sri. V.S.Raja, M.A., formerly Addl. Inspector General of Prisons, Karnataka, joined as Director of APCA on 31.10.2016, afternoon. He has 32 years of outstanding service in prisons and correctional services of Karnataka state. After obtaining Master of Arts in Sociology from Bangalore University, he has joined Karnataka Prisons Service as Assistant Superintendent in 1983. A distinguished alumnus of APCA, he was the best-all-rounder and best-in-subject medal winner in the 6th batch of one-year basic course at the Academy in 1985.
During the initial years of his career, he has worked as Asst. Superintendent of Central Prisons at Bangalore (1983-85; 1988-92) and Belgaum (1986-87) and as Superintendent of District Prison, Mangalore (1992-95) and District Headquarters Sub Jail, Mandya (1995-97). In 1997 he was promoted as Superintendent of Central Prison and headed Central Prison, Bellary (1997-2002). In 2002 he was promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent and served in Central Prison, Bangalore (2002-2008). He was promoted as Deputy Inspector General of Prisons in 2008 and served as DIG, Prison Headquarters, Bangalore till 2014. Subsequently in the year 2014, he was promoted as Addl. Inspector General of Prisons, Karnataka, and served till his retirement in 2015. He was the first prison cadre officer in Karnataka to be appointed as Addl. I.G. of Prisons. Recognizing his sincere work and services, the Government of Karnataka appointed him as a Consultant to DG of Police & I.G. of Prisons, for a period of one year.
As a versatile and exceptionally skilled prison officer, he had successfully handled several critical situations in prisons across the State. He has been instrumental in organizing various vocational training programmes and moral and reformative programmes in prisons. Throughout his career, he has tried his best to implement the reformative ideals in prisons. In recognition of his sincere, dedicated and commendable services to the nation, in particular to Correctional Administration, he was decorated with the ‘President’s Correctional Services Medal for Meritorious Service’ in the year 2007 and the precious ‘President’s Correctional Medal for Distinguished Service’ in 2013. The Academy has selected him for the prestigious KLN Reddy Memorial Award in 2012 for his praiseworthy contributions to the betterment and advancement of Prison and Correctional Administration of the country.
