Sri.K.L.N.Reddy, the Founder-Director of the Academy, was a graduate from Nizam College at Hyderabad. He was directly recruited as an Assistant Superintendent of Jails in the year 1951 and was trained at Lucknow Jail Training Institute, Uttar Pradesh. He worked as Assistant Superintendent of Jails, Hyderabad Region till the formation of Andhra Pradesh as a separate State. He was promoted as Superintendent of Jails in 1957 and as DIG of Prisons in 1973. He was deputed for training on Prison Administration in the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia. He was instrumental in establishing the first Open Jail in the country at Moula Ali, Hyderabad. Sri. Reddy was also a member of All India Jail Reforms Committee, headed by Justice A.N.Mulla during 1980-83. The vision and tireless efforts of Sri. Reddy led to establishment of a training institute for prison officers for South India - the Regional Institute of Correctional Administration (later renamed as Academy of Prisons and Correctional Administration) in the year 1979 at Vellore. He was the founding Director of the Academy and served in that position till 1987.
In fond memory of the Founder-Director of the Academy, late Sri. KLN Reddy, APCA has instituted an annual endowment award since 1993. Along with APCA many well wishers have contributed to the formation of this endowment. The KLN Reddy Memorial Award is presented to an eminent person, who has contributed distinguished services for the betterment of Prison and Correctional Administration primarily and the other sub-systems of criminal justice. The recipient should have put in not less than 20 years of service. The Award consists of a citation and memento and it is conferred annually. The Board of Management of APCA selects the awardee. The recipient may deliver a lecture on any topic of their choice at the time of receiving the Award.
